I strongly support the minimum wage of $15 an hour that was recently vetoed by Governor Rauner. The only difference is that I would advocate for it to take effect sooner. Even in a two earner household, it is clear that at the present minimum wage ($8.25 in IL) a couple could not support themselves without other government assistance. However, at a $15 an hour minimum wage that couple could earn enough that they would not need assistance. Businesses will of course not like this, but when allowing a minimum wage that does not cover basic living expenses the government is essentially subsidizing the business community. I think that should stop. There will of course be some people that are unemployed, and I would try to create programs to give any unemployed person who is capable and wants it a state job at $12.50 an hour performing maintenance and other services for our government.
